Executor Duties

The executor of an estate is responsible for carrying out the instructions in a will. The most common instruction is to distribute property according to the testator's wishes. If you are named as an executor, it may be time to review your life insurance and health care coverage. It might also be wise to gather all of your financial statements and documents, including bank statements, investment records, tax returns, wills or trusts that name you as beneficiary or trustee. You should also inventory assets such as furniture or jewelry so that they can be distributed appropriately among heirs after probate has been completed.
